Daphoenus caroniavorus was named by White (1942). Its type locality is Thomas Farm, which is in a Hemingfordian terrestrial sandstone/claystone in the Alachua Formation of Florida.
It was recombined as Cynelos caroniavorus by Tedford and Frailey (1976) and Hunt (1998).
