Taxonomy
Canis vetulus was named by Lund (1842). It is extant. Its type locality is Lagoa Santa, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in Brazil.
It was recombined as Lycalopex vetulus by Burmeister (1854), Bourguignat (1875), Cabrera (1931), van Gelder (1978), Wilson and Reeder (2005) and Favarini et al. (2022).
