Taxonomy
Canis adoxus was named by Martin (1971). Its type specimen is Basel Natural History Museum, RSS 45, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Saint-Estève, which is in a Pliocene terrestrial horizon in France.
It was recombined as Eucyon adoxus by Martin (1973), Spassov and Rook (2006) and Wang et al. (2008).
