Taxonomy
Palaeocyon tarijensis was named by Ameghino (1902). Its type specimen is MACN-Pv 1452, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Tarija, which is in a Pleistocene fluvial horizon in the Tarija Formation of Bolivia.
It was recombined as Pleurocyon tarijensis by Mercerat (1917); it was recombined as Canis tarijensis by Kraglievich (1928); it was recombined as Theriodictis tarijensis by Hoffstetter (1963) and Wang et al. (2008); it was recombined as Protocyon tarijensis by Prevosti (2023).
