The epithet patagonicus refers to the South American Patagonia region

Taxonomy
Nelumbopollenites patagonicus was named by De Benedetti et al. (2023). Its type specimen is MPEF-PA 622, a microspore, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cerro Bosta (CBO) (Paleobotany), which is in a Maastrichtian marginal marine siltstone in the La Colonia Formation of Argentina.

F. De Benedetti et al. 2023Pollen grain tricolpate, prolate, amb circular, oval in equatorial view. Colpi long, extended to the poles. Exine up to 3 μm thick, two-layered, sexine thicker than nexine, semitectate. Tectum thick, supported by short columellae. Sexine rugulate-foveolate/reticulate.
