Mustela lutra canadensis was named by Schreber (1776). It is extant.
It was recombined as Mustela (Lutra) canadensis by Kerr (1792); it was recombined as Lutra canadensis by Hay (1902), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Willemsen (1992); it was recombined as Lontra canadensis by Gray (1843), van Zyll de Jong (1987), Wilson and Reeder (1993), Lariviere (1998), Marmi et al. (2004) and Cherin et al. (2016).
