Taxonomy
Machaerodus brachyops was named by Cope (1878). It is the type species of Nimravus.

It was recombined as Hoplophoneus brachyops by Cope (1879); it was recombined as Pogonodon brachyops by Cope (1880), Merriam (1906) and Thorpe (1920); it was recombined as Dinictis brachyops by Adams (1896); it was recombined as Deinictis brachyops by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Nimravus brachyops by Cope (1879), Cope (1881), Mivart (1881), Matthew (1910), Toohey (1959), Macdonald (1963), Macdonald (1970), Bryant (1996), Peigné (2003) and Barrett (2016).
