Mellivorinae was named by Gray (1865) [also attributed to Gill 1872]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Mustelidae by Bryant (1968), Bjork (1970), Hendey (1974), Edwards (1976), Ginsburg (1977), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Muizon (1982) and Valenciano et al. (2015).
