Taxonomy
Xenacanthus was named by Beyrich (1848). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pleuracanthus by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Elasmobranchii by Irmis (2005); and to Xenacanthidae by Jordan (1963), Daly (1973), Zangerl (1981), Murry (1989), Hampe (2003), Heckert (2004) and Ginter et al. (2010).
