Canina was named by Gray (1825). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subtribe Canina by Wang et al. (2008), Tedford et al. (2009) and Ruiz-Ramoni et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Felidae by Gray (1825); to Canidae by Bonaparte (1850); and to Canini by Wang et al. (2008), Tedford et al. (2009) and Ruiz-Ramoni et al. (2022).
