Lonchocephalus was named by Owen (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1,16]. It is not extant. Its type is Lonchocephalus chippewaensis.

It was reranked as Ptychoparia (Lonchocephalus) by Walcott (1899).

It was assigned to Ptychoparia by Walcott (1899); to Lonchocephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
