Breviphrentis was named by Stumm (1949) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Give-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Amplexus invaginatus.

It was reranked as Siphonophrentis (Breviphrentis) by Merriam (1974), McAllister (1974).

It was assigned to Streptelasmatinae by Hill (1956); to Siphonophrentis by Merriam (1974), McAllister (1974); to Breviphyllinae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).

C. W. Merriam 1974This narrow, elongate Siphonophrentis is of markedly segmented appearance when fully mature; the cylindrical corallum has deep lateral shelving indentations and rejuvenescence flanges. The cardinal fossula is commonly weak or unrecognizable in the mature calice. The septal stereozone is medium to wide.
