Diatomyidae was named by Mein and Ginsburg (1997) [includes the extant Laonastes]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Hystricognathi by Dawson et al. (2006); and to Rodentia by Marivaux and Welcomme (2003), Flynn (2007).
