Pteropus was named by Brisson (1762) [conserved in ICZN Opinion 1894]. It is extant. Its type is Vespertilio niger.
It was assigned to Pteropina by Gray (1825); and to Pteropodidae by Wilson and Reeder (2005) and Burney et al. (2008).
