Phascolomys was named by Illiger (1811). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Phascolomyoidea.
It was assigned to Marsupialia by Illiger (1811); to Phascolomyidae by Lydekker (1894), Pocock (1921); and to Vombatidae by Wells (1989).
