Orcaella brevirostris (Irrawaddy dolphin)

Taxonomy
Orca (Orcaella) brevirostris was named by Gray (1866). It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 1454a, a skull. Its type locality is Waltair, which is in a Holocene coastal horizon in India. It is the type species of Orca (Orcaella).

It was recombined as Phocaena (Orca) brevirostris by Owen (1866) and Owen (1866); it was recombined as Orca brevirostris by Gray (1868); it was recombined as Orcella brevirostris by Trouessart (1904) and Turner (1912); it was recombined as Orcaella brevirostris by Scott (1873), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Hershkovitz (1966), Rice (1998), Mead and Brownell (2005), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Geisler et al. (2011), Perrin et al. (2013) and Jefferson (2021).
