Taxonomy
Microberardius africanus was named by Bianucci et al. (2007). Its type specimen is SAMP PQ 3003, a partial skull (partial skull including the anteriorly worn rostrum, most of the dorsal surface of the cranium and the nearly complete vertex), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Southern Africa, offshore, which is in a Miocene/Pliocene marine phosphorite in South Africa. It is the type species of Microberardius.
