Apatornis celer

Taxonomy
Ichthyornis celer was named by Marsh (1873). Its type specimen is YPM 1451, a set of postcrania (synsacrum), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Butte Creek, which is in a Coniacian/Santonian carbonate chalk in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas. It is the type species of Apatornis.

It was recombined as Apatornis celer by Marsh (1873), Marsh (1873), Marsh (1880), Zittel (1890), Hay (1902), Shufeldt (1915), Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1956), Brodkorb (1971), Hope (2002), Clarke (2004), Carrano (2025).
