Ophiuraster burrisi was named by Miller (1958). Its type specimen is Paleontological collection of the Department of Geology, University of Kansas, Holotype 11382H 1 and is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Ophiomusium burrisi by Miller (1963); it was recombined as Archaeophiomusium burrisi by Mayou (1967), Hattin (1967), Mayou (1969).
