Taxonomy
Venus rileyi was named by Conrad (1838) [DISTRIBUTION: Virginia-North Carolina; Early Pliocene-Late Pliocene.]. It is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Mercenaria rileyi by Conrad (1863); it was recombined as Venus (Mercenaria) campechiensis rileyi by Gardner (1943); it was recombined as Mercenaria campechiensis rileyi by Hendy et al. (2008).
