Taxonomy
Trionyx spiniferus was named by LeSueur (1827). It is extant.

It was corrected as Trionyx spinifer by Wilson (1967); it was recombined as Apalone spinifera by Meylan (1987), Weisrock and Janzen (2000), van Dijk et al. (2014).
