Taxonomy
Cytherea proxima was named by Deshayes (1857) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; western Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Microcallista.

It was recombined as Microcallista proxima by Stewart (1930); it was recombined as Macrocallista proxima by Hassan (1953); it was recombined as Callista proxima by Glibert (1985); it was recombined as Callista (Microcallista) proxima by Le Renard and Pacaud (1995).
