Eschrichtioides gastaldii
Taxonomy
Cetotherium gastaldii was named by Strobel (1881) [No type specimen number is listed by Strobel (1875).]. Its type specimen is MRSN 13802, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cortandone, which is in a Zanclean deltaic sandstone in the Sabbie d'Asti Formation of Italy.
It was recombined as Balaenoptera gastaldii by Portis (1886), Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Deméré (1986), Deméré et al. (2005); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eschrichtiidae by Bisconti and Varola (2006); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eschrichtioides by Marx and Fordyce (2015); it was recombined as Eschrichtioides gastaldii by Bisconti (2008), Marx (2011), Tsai et al. (2014), Gol'din and Steeman (2015).
It was recombined as Balaenoptera gastaldii by Portis (1886), Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Deméré (1986), Deméré et al. (2005); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eschrichtiidae by Bisconti and Varola (2006); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Eschrichtioides by Marx and Fordyce (2015); it was recombined as Eschrichtioides gastaldii by Bisconti (2008), Marx (2011), Tsai et al.
