Venus hanetianus was named by d'Orbigny (1842) [DISTRIBUTION: Cenozoic; Chile. TYPE SPECIMEN: based on first listed syntype.]. Its type specimen is MNHN-R09523, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Eurhomalea hanetianus by Herm (1969); it was recombined as Retrotapes hanetianus by Griffin and Nielsen (2008).
