Taxonomy
Lamna rapax was named by Quaas (1902).

It was synonymized subjectively with Scapanorhynchus rhaphiodon by Dartevelle and Casier (1943); it was recombined as Scapanorhynchus rapax by Applegate (1970), Herman (1977), Thurmond and Jones (1981), Retzler et al. (2013).
