Colaptes was named by Vigors (1825). It is extant. Its type is Cuculus auratus.

It was reranked as Geopicus (Colaptes) by Malherbe (1852).

It was assigned to Geopicus by Malherbe (1852); to Picinae by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956); and to Picidae by Hay (1930), Schultz and Howard (1935), Parmalee and Klippel (1982), Morgan (1994), Clements et al. (2017), Tambussi et al. (2023).
