Taxonomy
Junco was named by Wagler (1831). It is extant. Its type is Junco phaeonotus. It was considered unknown by Emslie (1998).

It was assigned to Fringillinae by Hay (1930); to Fringillidae by Wetmore (1924), Lambrecht (1933) and Wetmore (1962); to Emberizidae by Emslie (1998); and to Passerellidae by Clements et al. (2017).
