Wailekia was named by Ducrocq et al. (1995). Its type is Wailekia orientale.
It was assigned to Anthropoidea by Ducrocq et al. (1995); to Sivaladapidae by Qi and Beard (1998); and to Hoanghoniinae by Gunnell and Miller (2001).
