Testudo chilensis was named by Gray (1870). It is extant.

It was recombined as Geochelone (Chelonoides) chilensis by Auffenberg (1971); it was recombined as Geochelone chilensis by Crumly (1982); it was recombined as Chelonoidis chilensis by Gray (1870), Auffenberg (1974), de Broin and de la Fuente (1993), van Dijk et al. (2014).
