Taxonomy
Mafatrisauropus errans was named by Ellenberger (1970). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Maphutseng II tracksite (zone A/4), which is in a Norian/Rhaetian terrestrial sandstone/claystone in the Elliot Formation of Lesotho. It is the type species of Mafatrisauropus.

P. Ellenberger 1972Aux précisions génériques, nous ajoutons les caractères spécifiques suivants:
- PES: Longueur du pied, 160 mm (200 mm dans les cas où paraît le "talon"); doigt II, 100 mm; de III, 120 mm; de IV, 110 (+ 30 ?) mm; de V, ? mm; projection de III en avant du bout des doigts latéraux, 80 mm). Largeur du pied entre l'extrémité des doigts latéraux, 140 à 150 mm. Divarication totale II-IV, 40-50° (II-III, 19°+; III-IV, 21°+). Les coussinets de phalanges sont peu visibles, raccourcis et englobés dans une sole pédieuse (palmée?). L'arrière du pied est très particulier: exceptionnellement on discerne un "talon" médian, pointu, correspondant à l'articulation des 3 métatarses. La plupart du temps, le "faux talonll écourté se situe au niveau des 2ème phalanges des 3 doigts, l'animal étant spécifiquement digitigrade.
- MANUS: Nulle part la main n'a touché le sol.
- PISTE: Enjambée, piste 1: de 1,34 m à 1,44 m, piste 2: 1,22 m (Pas = 0,67 à 0,72 m), ped. angulatio, piste l: 12° à 16°, piste 2: 12° à 21°. Ecartement, piste 1: 0,11 m à 0,21 m, piste 2: 0, 11 m à 0,25 m: la démarche se fait donc avec un balancement (dandinement) important.
