Rangwapithecus was named by Andrews (1974). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Dryopithecinae by Pilbeam et al. (1977); to Nyanzapithecinae by Rossie and MacLatchy (2006); and to Proconsulidae by Andrews (1992) and Zalmout et al. (2010).
