Rophalis was named by Pictet (1854). Its type is Rophalis relicta.

It was reranked as Sisyra (Rophalis) by Hagen (1856); it was corrected as Rhophalis by Krüger (1923).

It was assigned to Sisyra by Hagen (1856); to Sisyrinae by Krüger (1923), Carpenter (1992); and to Nevrorthidae by Nel and Jarzembowski (1997), Makarkin and Perkovsky (2009), Wichard (2016).
