Archeosmylidae was named by Riek (1953). Its type is Archeosmylus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Permithonidae by Whalley (1988).

It was assigned to Planipennia by Riek (1955), Carpenter (1992); to Neuroptera by Riek (1953), Makarkin et al. (2014); and to Osmyloidea by Winterton et al. (2019).
