Archeosmylus was named by Riek (1953). Its type is Archeosmylus pectinatus. It is the type genus of Archeosmylidae.
It was assigned to Permithonidae by Whalley (1988); and to Archeosmylidae by Riek (1953), Riek (1955), Riek (1956), Carpenter (1992), van Dijk and Geertsema (1999), Makarkin et al. (2014), Winterton et al. (2019).
