Taxonomy
Myrmeleon was named by Linnaeus (1767). It is extant. It is the type genus of Myrmeleonides, Myrmeleontinae, Myrmeleontini.
It was assigned to Neuroptera by Linnaeus (1767), Drury (1770), Müller (1776) and Latreille (1796); to Synistata by Fabricius (1775) and Fabricius (1798); to Myrmeleonides by Latreille (1802); to Myrmeleontidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Myrmeleontini by Michel et al. (2017) and Machado et al. (2019).
