Ascalaphus was named by Fabricius (1775). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ascalaphidae, Ascalaphinae, Ascalaphini.
It was assigned to Neuroptera by Latreille (1796); to Synistata by Fabricius (1775) and Fabricius (1798); to Myrmeleonides by Latreille (1802); to Ascalaphidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Ascalaphini by Machado et al. (2019).
