Geranopteridae was named by Mayr and Mourer-Chauviré (2000). It is not extant. Its type is Geranopterus.

It was assigned to Coracioidea by Mayr and Mourer-Chauviré (2000); to Coraciiformes by Mayr (2005); and to Coracii by Clarke et al. (2009).
