Delphinus karsteni was named by Olfers (1839) [No type specimen number is listed by Olfers (1841).]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bünde, Westfalen, which is in a Neogene marine sandstone in Germany.
It was recombined as Delphinorhynchus karsteni by Laurillard (1841); it was recombined as Globiceps karstenii by Brandt (1873); it was misspelled as Delphinus karsteinii by Pictet (1853); it was recombined as Globicephalus karsteni by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904).
