Protopanorpa was named by Tillyard (1926).

It was assigned to Permopanorpidae by Carpenter (1930); to Mesochoristidae by Martynov (1932); to Protopanorpidae by Willmann (1989); to Permochoristidae by Carpenter (1992) and Novokshonov (1998); and to Agetopanorpinae by Willmann (1978), Novokshonov (1997) and Bashkuev (2010).

Synonyms

Protopanorpoides was named by Martynova (1962). Its type is Protopanorpa elongata.

It was synonymized subjectively with Protopanorpa by Novokshonov (1997).

It was assigned to Protochoristinae by Martynova (1962); to Agetopanorpinae by Willmann (1978); to Mecoptera by Carpenter (1992); and to Agetopanorpidae by Willmann (1989) and Novokshonov (1993).
