Dinopanorpa was named by Cockerell (1925). Its type is Dinopanorpa megarche. It is the type genus of Dinopanorpidae.

It was assigned to Panorpidae by Cockerell (1925); and to Dinopanorpidae by Carpenter (1972), Willmann (1978), Carpenter (1992).
