Taxonomy

Panorpa was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Panorpatae, Panorpinae.

It was assigned to Insecta by Geoffroy (1762); to Neuroptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Scopoli (1763), Müller (1764), Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Synistata by Fabricius (1775), Fabricius (1798); to Panorpatae by Latreille (1802); to Panorpidae by Scudder (1890), Cockerell (1908), Statz (1936), Willmann (1978), Carpenter (1992); and to Panorpinae by Wang and Hua (2021), Jouault and Nel (2022).
