Austropanorpa was named by Riek (1952). Its type is Austropanorpa australis. It is the type genus of Austropanorpidae.
It was assigned to Panorpidae by Riek (1952); to Mecoptera by Carpenter (1992); and to Austropanorpidae by Willmann (1977), Willmann (1978), Willmann (1987), Lambkin (2018) and Krzemiński et al. (2018).
