Tanyderophryne was named by Rohdendorf (1962). Its type is Tanyderophryne multinervis. It is the type genus of Tanyderophrynidae.
It was assigned to Tanyderophryneidae by Rohdendorf (1962), Carpenter (1992); and to Tanyderophrynidae by Evenhuis (1994).
