Cretodiamesa was named by Kalugina (1976). It is not extant. Its type is Cretodiamesa taimyrica. It is the type genus of Cretodiamesini.

It was assigned to Cretodiamesini by Kalugina (1976); to Chironomidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Cretodiamesinae by Ashe et al. (2024).
