Diamesa was named by Walts (1837). It is extant. It is the type genus of Diamesinae.

It was assigned to Tanypinae by Kieffer (1906); to Chironomidae by Aldrich (1905), Carpenter (1992); and to Diamesinae by Ashe et al. (2024).
