Taxonomy
Tanypus was named by Meigen (1803). It is extant. It is the type genus of Tanypodinae, Tanypodini.
It was assigned to Tanypinae by Kieffer (1906); to Tanypodinae by Zhang (1989); to Chironomidae by Aldrich (1905) and Carpenter (1992); and to Tanypodini by Krosch et al. (2022).
