Leia was named by Meigen (1818). It is extant. It is the type genus of Leiini, Leiini.
It was assigned to Mycetophilinae by Loew (1850), Johannsen (1909), Theobald (1937); to Leiini by Statz (1944); to Leiinae by Matile (1989); to Mycetophilidae by Aldrich (1905), Carpenter (1992); to Gnoristinae by Blagoderov (2019); and to Leiini by Oliveira and Amorim (2021).
