Platyura was named by Meigen (1803). It is extant. It is the type genus of Platyurina.
It was assigned to Ceroplatinae by Meunier (1904) and Johannsen (1909); to Mycetophilidae by Aldrich (1905) and Carpenter (1992); to Orfeliini by Evenhuis (2006); and to Platyurinae by Mantič et al. (2020).
