Taxonomy

Bombylius was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Bombyliini, Bombyliinae, Bombylarii.

It was assigned to Halterata by Scopoli (1763); to Diptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Müller (1764), Schaeffer (1766), Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796); to Antliata by Fabricius (1775), Fabricius (1798); to Bombylarii by Latreille (1802); to Bombyliidae by Aldrich (1905), Carpenter (1992); and to Bombyliini by Evenhuis and Greathead (1999), Li and Yeates (2019).

Synonyms

Bombylius fossilis was named by Handlirsch (1907). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Gabbro (Bosniaski collection), which is in a Messinian terrestrial horizon in Italy.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Handlirsch (1907); it was recombined as Bombylius (Bombylius) fossilis by Evenhuis and Greathead (1999).
Bombylius tertiarius was named by Handlirsch (1907). Its type specimen is NHMW 1984/32/173, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Gabbro (Bosniaski collection), which is in a Messinian terrestrial horizon in Italy.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Handlirsch (1907); it was recombined as Bombylius (Bombylius) tertiarius by Evenhuis and Greathead (1999).
