Taxonomy
Leptogaster was named by Meigen (1803). It is extant. It is the type genus of Leptogastrinae, Leptogastrini.

It was assigned to Leptogastrinae by Hull (1962); to Asilidae by Aldrich (1905), Carpenter (1992); and to Leptogastrini by Dikow (2009).
